Managing Variant Groups
How to create and manage variant groups for your menu items.
Managing Variant Groups
Variant groups are collections of individual variant items that allow customers to customize their orders. They define the rules for how many options a customer can choose from a given set of variants.
Creating an Inline Variant Group
An inline variant group is created directly within a specific menu item and is not reusable by other items. This is ideal for unique customization options for a single item.
- Navigate to the Full Edit page of the menu item you wish to add a variant group to.
- Go to the Variants section.
- Click on Add Variant Group.
- In the modal, provide the following details:
- Name: A descriptive name for the group (e.g., "Choose Your Sauce", "Select Your Size").
- Description: (Optional) Further explanation for the customer.
- Minimum Selections (Min): The minimum number of variant items a customer must select from this group. Set to
0
if the selection is optional. - Maximum Selections (Max): The maximum number of variant items a customer can select from this group.
- Allow Duplicates (Unique): Check this box if customers can select the same variant item multiple times (e.g., adding "Extra Cheese" twice). Uncheck if each selection must be unique.
- Show Price After: If checked, the price of the variant item will be displayed after its name.
- Once the group is created, you can start adding
Variant Item
s to it. Search for existing variant items or create new ones directly from this interface.
Adding Variant Items to a Group
After creating a variant group (either inline or from a template), you need to populate it with Variant Item
s:
- Within the variant group editor, you will see an option to Add Variant Item.
- Search for the
Variant Item
you wish to add. If it doesn't exist, you can create it on the fly. - Select the
Variant Item
to add it to the group. - You can reorder the variant items within the group by dragging and dropping them.
Editing a Variant Group
To edit an existing variant group:
- Navigate to the Full Edit page of the menu item.
- Go to the Variants section.
- Click on the variant group you wish to edit.
- You can modify its name, description, min/max selections, and whether duplicates are allowed.
- You can also add or remove
Variant Item
s from the group.
Deleting a Variant Group
To delete a variant group:
- Navigate to the Full Edit page of the menu item.
- Go to the Variants section.
- Click the delete icon next to the variant group you wish to remove.
- Confirm the deletion. Deleting an inline variant group will remove it only from that specific menu item. If it's a group created from a template, it will unlink it from the template, but the template itself will remain.
Use Cases for Inline Variant Groups
- Item-Specific Customizations: When a set of options is only relevant to one particular menu item. For example, a "Build Your Own Sandwich" item might have unique bread choices not found elsewhere.
- Limited-Time Offers: For seasonal or promotional items that have unique, non-reusable customization options.
- Rapid Prototyping: When you're quickly setting up a new item and don't foresee the need to reuse its variant options across other items.
